Description
Femara is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor (lowers estrogen production) used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is often given to women who have been taking tamoxifen (Nolvadex, Soltamox) for 5 years. Femara is available in generic form. Common side effects of Femara include hot flashes, hair loss, joint/bone/muscle pain, tiredness, unusual sweating or night sweats, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, weight gain, weakness, flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling), headache, constipation, numbness/tingling/weakness/stiffness in your hand or fingers, or pain in your hand that spreads to your arm, wrist, forearm, or shoulder.
Femara is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of local or metastatic breast cancer that is hormone receptor positive or has an unknown receptor status in postmenopausal women.Femara is intended for use only by women who are no longer of childbearing age. Possible candidates must have already ceased to menstruate. It is often used in patients who have already undergone other cancer treatments, such as radiation, chemotherapy, and used other cancer drugs, like tamoxifen. This nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor may help prevent any remaining cancer cells from spreading.

Application
1) The anti-estrogen action of Femara has been shown to be useful in pretreatment for termination of pregnancy, in combination with misoprostol. It can be used in place of mifepristone, which is expensive and unavailable in many countries.
2) Femara is sometimes used as a treatment for gynecomastia, although it is probably most effective at this if caught in an early stage (such as in users of anabolic steroids).
3) Femara has also been shown to delay the fusing of the growth plates in mice.When used in combination with growth hormone, Femara has been shown effective in one adolescent boy with a short stature.
