Polyvvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) also commonly called Polyvidone or Povidone, is a water-soluble polymer made from the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone. PVP is soluble in water and other polar solvents. PVP is used as a binder in tablet making and is used in many pharmaceutical tablets,it simply passes through the body when taken orally. The binding effect of PVP is achieved both in wet and dry granulation and in direct tablet compresion.

Povidone is a hygroscopic polymer ,supplied in white or creamy white powder or flakes, ranging from low to high viscosity & low to high molecular weight, which characterized by K Value. It’s easily soluble in water and many other organic solvents, with excellent hygroscopisty,film-forming,adhesive,chemical stability and toxicological safeness characters.

Povidone is one of the most important excipient in the worldwide for pharmaceutical industry, whatever for human health care products and animal health care products. It’s more and more used as:

1)Binder for tables,capsule

2)Sugar coatings and films

3)Thickening agent

4)Solubility Improver for poorly soluble drugs

5)Bioavailability Enhancer for drug’s active ingredients

6)Pore-forming for membrane products.

Magnesium stearate (also known as octadecanoic acid) is a white magnesium salt that is solid at room temperature. It has the chemical formula C36H70MgO4. It is a salt containing two equivalents of stearate (the anion of stearic acid) and one magnesium cation (Mg2+). Stearic acid is a saturated 18 carbon chain fatty acid that is frequently found in meats as well as plant foods. The highest-quality vegetable based magnesium stearate we use in some of our formulations contains 92%-97% stearate with trace amounts of palmitate, a saturated 16-carbon chain fatty acid frequently found in foods. Due to its high stability it is unlikely that the body absorbs any of the magnesium stearate in a supplement formulation. Stearic acid itself, In supplement dosage forms, is used as an emulsifying agent, solubilizing agent, tablet and capsule lubricant.

Magnesium stearate melts at about 88°C, is not soluble in water, and is generally considered safe for human consumption (GRAS). Because it is widely regarded as harmless, it is often used as a filling agent in the manufacture of nutritional and pharmaceutical formulations. Magnesium Stearate serves as an efficient lubricant for mold release purposes during tabletting processes. Its hydrophobic (i.e., water-repelling) properties prevent finished products from absorbing water and improve flowability during capsule filling.

Magnesium stearate is typically used in a concentration range of 0.25%-2%. Higher values can result in decreased absorption of the product. We consequently limit magnesium stearate concentrations in our formulations to 1% or less. Whenever possible, we encourage our manufacturers instead to utilize silica and magnesium trisilicate at slightly higher level s in order to obtain the necessary lubricating/glidant effects. In most capsule formulations this works well. However, in tablet manufacture it is generally necessary to use magnesium stearate at the 1% concentration in order to enable tablet release from molds. In a few cases where an encapsulated product is greatly hydroscopic (i.e., water-absorbing) (such as l-carnosine and acetyl-l-carnitine), it is necessary to utilize up to 1% magnesium stearate in order to block excess moisture uptake leading to poor or uneven capsule filling.
