Finasteride is a medication used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and male pattern hair loss. It is a type II and type III 5α-reductase inhibitor; 5α-reductase, an enzyme, converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

The prostate gland commonly becomes larger in older men. Prostate gland enlargement is also called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The prostate is situated close to the bladder, so its enlargement can cause problems with passing urine. Common symptoms that are experienced are having to wait before your urine starts to flow, taking longer at the toilet, dribbling urine, and a feeling that your bladder is not quite empty.

Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of the hormone testosterone to the more potent hormone dihydrotestosterone. It does this by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Dihydrotestosterone is partly responsible for making the prostate enlarge. Therefore, a reduced amount of dihydrotestosterone in the prostate causes it to shrink. This helps you to pass urine more easily.

Small doses of finasteride are prescribed for men with hair loss. for male pattern baldness.

Uses

Finasteride is used to shrink an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) in adult men. It may be used alone or taken in combination with other medications to reduce symptoms of BPH and may also reduce the need for surgery.

Finasteride may improve symptoms of BPH and provide benefits such as decreased urge to urinate, better urine flow with less straining, less of a feeling that the bladder is not completely emptied, and decreased nighttime urination. This medication works by decreasing the amount of a natural body hormone (DHT) that causes growth of the prostate.

Finasteride is not approved for prevention of prostate cancer. It may slightly increase the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks.

Women and children should not use this medication.

Finasteride is used for:

Treating urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hyperplasia ). It is also used to lower the risk of needing surgery to treat BPH. It may be used with another medicine (doxazosin) to lower the risk of worsening BPH.

Finasteride is a type of steroid reductase inhibitor. It works by reducing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. This makes the prostate gland smaller, which helps to relieve urinary problems.

Medical uses

Prostate enlargement
Physicians sometimes use finasteride for the treatment of BPH, informally known as an enlarged prostate. Finasteride may improve the symptoms associated with BPH such as difficulty urinating, getting up during the night to urinate, hesitation at the start of urination, and decreased urinary flow. It provides less symptomatic relief than alpha-1 blockers such as tamsulosin and symptomatic relief is slower in onset (six months or more of treatment with finasteride may be required to determine the therapeutic results of treatment).

Pattern hair loss
Finasteride is sometimes used to treat pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Treatment slows further hair loss and provides about 30% improvement in hair loss after six months of treatment, with effectiveness usually only persisting as long as the drug is taken, although on occasion hair loss is slowed indefinitely following withdrawal. Finasteride has also been tested for pattern hair loss in women; the results were no better than placebo.

Off-label uses

Excessive hair growth
Finasteride has been found to be effective in the treatment of hirsutism (excessive facial and/or body hair growth) in women. Other studies using finasteride for hirsutism have also found it to be clearly effective.

Transgender women

Finasteride is sometimes used in hormone replacement therapy for transgender women due to its antiandrogen properties, in combination with a form of estrogen .
